Bill Woods. JR. posted a condolence

My name is Bill Woods, Jr. My Dad, Bill Woods coached Gene at Memorial High School and they later worked for years together at Indian Hills High School. My Dad always spoke highly of Gene even as he got on in years. We convinced my parents to sell the Ho-Ho-Kus house in 2010 and move to RI where I live with 2 of my 4 siblings. Dad passed in 2014 and Mom in 2018. I'm writing this note now because last night Gene and my Dad were in a dream I had. I'm 73 and sane. But the dream seemed like yesterday. RIP

Dear Pat, Karen & Family,
I had the opportunity to know your husband and dad many years ago. Mr. Prebola was one of my teachers at Indian Hills High School in Oakland. I remember him as a kind and caring person who not only made a difference in my daily life at the time, but also a difference in my days life long. He modeled motivation and passion for his students to always work to the highest level. His passion certainly left an impression on me as I navigated higher education and life. I was fortunate in this very small world to later work together with Gene's daughter Karen Lavin in a nearby school district. Karen's kindness, talent, motivation, and dedication to the profession is one of the many positive legacy's Mr. Prebola leaves. His light will shine on through Karen, his wife Pat, and all of his beautiful family members. True evidence for a life well lived. Keep the faith especially during the holiday season and in the coming days. You are all in my heart , thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time.
Much love,
Carlyn Walsh

I was a student at IHHS from 1985 to 1989 and Mr. Prebola stands out in my memory as a man of strength and integrity. He had a presence and was so kind to me in our limited interactions. May his memories be a comfort to all who loved him.

Coach Prebola was a gifted wrestling coach that always encouraged us to become better. I remember him when he first began coaching at IHHS in the mid 1960s and taught us that there is much more to wrestling than just physical strength, one must use all your strengths to be successful. May he rest in peace.

Accept my deepest sympathy. I worked with Gene at Indian Hills. He was one of the most caring and helpful teachers on our staff. He coached our son, Brian, in track and gave him good advice about sportsmanship and life. Thanks Gene for making a difference in our life and in the lives of many others.

My condolences to the Prebola family. “Mr. Prebola” was a friendly neighbor, a great little league coach (with a booming voice) and a committed family man (who among many other things loved giving his teenage sons a hard time on the driveway basketball court). Always willing to help others, he was a great person who will be missed but will live in our memories forever. May he Rest In Peace.

He was quite a guy and a fantastic coach to play for. Most important, he was a very, very good man that every player, student, individual came to respect and admire. May he rest in peace with the knowledge he was such a wonderful, positive influence on hundreds of kids.
Sincerely,

To Pat and the entire family,
May you receive God's peace and comfort at this difficult time. My condolences are with you and your family. Gene was a dear friend and the years we coached and taught together at Indian Hills, the fun and also the serious talks we had are my special memories. He made a great impact on me, his students, his athletes, and teaching peers. Gene was an accomplished athlete, coach, and teacher but his greatest love was for his family.
I miss my friend.

Like so many who came to know Gene, our first introduction to him and his family was through our son’s school sports activities. The first impression was a big, gruff guy. However, it took only a matter of minutes to see who he really was. A person who would teach your child the meaning of good sportsmanship, team play and the work ethic required to succeed not only in sports, but in life. We considered ourselves very fortunate indeed to come to know Gene, not only as our son’s coach, but to develop a lasting friendship between our families that we cherish. Our deepest, and sincere condolences go out to Pat; Karen/Sean, Beth, Eric, Michael; Ken; Keith/Susan, Matthew, Luke, John; Kris/Jen, Andrew, Ava and Nicholas. May the realization of how many lives were profoundly touched by your husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather, give you some comfort in the days ahead. You are all in our prayers.
Love,
Bonnie & Ken

Coach Probola was exactly the man you could hope to have coaching football. Tough. Competitive. Sportsman. He was a serious competitor, but had a tremendous heart that took the bad breaks and calls that didnt go our way with the same passion and crooked smile he got on calls we didn’t deserve. He taught us a lot. He is gold in my memory and for our teammates. Thank you, coach!

Coach Prebola was a great coach and a great guy. He taught us to play football the right way. Year after year he produced undefeated Indian Hills freshman teams and prepared us for a successful varsity career. I know many times when we get together now, we still reminisce about something coach Prebola said or did that was impactful and made us laugh. Our condolences go out to all his family. He will be missed by many especially our Indian Hills football family!!
