Stephen Regis Monaghan passed away peacefully May 12, 2025 at the age of 60 surrounded by his loving family. He lived most of his life as an Oakland, NJ resident where he also raised his children with his former wife, Michelle Bardgett.
Steve spent much of his childhood at the Oakland Rec Field as a three-season athlete playing football, baseball and basketball. He attended St. Joseph’s Regional High School in Montvale, NJ where he excelled as a stellar football and baseball athlete. He graduated from Boston University, worked in Europe for a few years and forged into a sales career upon returning to the States. His professional journey settled in the document management and packaging supply industries.
Steve spent 10 years coaching Oakland Recreation football, baseball programs as well as girls’ recreational basketball. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, NY Yankees and NY Rangers. During the last years of his life he and his brother Jim co-hosted a weekly live sports commentary show called “Mono & Mono”.
Steve is survived by his children Emily Grace Monaghan and Sean Joseph Monaghan, ex-wife Michelle Bardgett, siblings Kenneth Monaghan, Jr. (Denise), Thomas Monaghan (Lisa), Christopher Monaghan (Julie), Mark Monaghan (Diane), Maryellen Monaghan Mullikin and James Monaghan as well as a multitude of dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Rd, Oakland, NJ.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, May 16th at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church, 117 Franklin Ave, Oakland. Interment will follow at Maryrest Cemetery, 770 Darlington Avenue, Mahwah, NJ.
