Back in the day, whenever a piece of electronic equipment such as a tape deck stopped working, I would put it aside and wait for when Fred came to visit to see if he could get it rolling again. And we would go into the basement and clean it with isopropyl rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Amazingly, sometimes it worked. And even when it didn’t, I would be thoroughly impressed at his meticulousness and patience as he worked the swab into the tiny mechanisms. He was always glad to help.

The Birk family is in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I always loved and admired how Freddy embraced his resemblance to Santa Claus. He talked every December about the children who would stare or do double-takes at the mall and how he would simply smile or wave to keep the mystery

Freddy was more a son to me than a son in law
Always there for me when I needed him
Words are insufficient to describe how happy he made Al and I for making our nancy so happy.

So many memories of Fred as my awesome neighbor for almost 27 years. Fred always had time for a quick chat in the driveway and was always quick to laugh. The love he shared with his family was so evident and he was such a dedicated husband and father. Truly a joy to have known him and to share life with on West Oakland Ave. Here is a pic from a La Leche League Halloween party at the Rec Field in Oakland.

My favorite thing about Fred is that when he asked “How are you?” He did not want a one word answer. He would talk with you for 20 or 30 minutes to really come to understand how I was. That is unique and I will miss that.
