Janice Mildred Roeder
3-13-1936 – 9-30-2023
Jan Roeder was called home to the Lord on Saturday, September 30 at the age of 87 after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Joseph E. and Ruth M. (Strome) Hacking. Born in Passaic, NJ, she graduated from Ridgewood HS in 1954 and attended Douglass College. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Frederick, to whom she was married for 65 years. They lived together in Hawthorne, NJ.
Jan was an extraordinary woman, bright, literate, and full of love. She was a registered medical secretary, working for many years in hospitals, dentists, and doctor’s offices and was also a licensed insurance agent. Her faith life was deep, and she shared this with her husband. They in turn shared their faith with their family and all whom they encountered in the way they lived. Jan was a parishioner of St. Paul’s RC Church in Prospect Park, NJ, where she taught CCD. Drawing from her Presbyterian roots, she had an amazing knowledge of scripture. She was known for her treasure box that she brought to class along with the occasional family pet, which delighted her students.
A devoted military wife, Jan was active in the Reserve Officers Association Ladies Club (ROA) and was a strong advocate for her children. She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey and Christopher, daughter-in-law Barbara, grandchildren Theresa Roeder, Stefan Roeder, Jacqueline Roeder, and Josef Roeder, as well as her dear sister Judith and two nephews.
