Obituary of William L. Fuchs

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our cherished William L. Fuchs, 92, peacefully passed away on October 17, 2021, surrounded by his loving children. Bill is survived by his son Randy, daughter and son-in-law Leighanne and Robert Egan, and daughter and son-in-law Heather and David Gavito. Blessed with six grandchildren, “Poppy” treasured Brandon and his wife Alyson, Connor, Trevor, Tierney, Brielle, and Brennan. Poppy was also an adoring great-grandfather to Brandon and Alyson’s children, Griffin and Lyla. Bill’s extraordinary life began in Meyersville, TX on November 25, 1928. Bill later graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX, and was then drafted into the Army. He served for 2 years at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas, where he met his future wife, Rosemary. Together they raised their family in Oakland, NJ as Bill enjoyed a sparkling 40-year career as Executive Vice President with The Equitable until retiring in 1992. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church was very important to Bill, where he became one of the first Eucharistic ministers in the parish. He was also very involved elsewhere in the community, serving as a soccer coach, active member of the Knights of Columbus, County Committeeman, and an appreciated mentor to many in local politics. Bill was a legendary gardener who provided family, friends, and neighbors summers filled with his prized green beans, zucchini, and tomatoes. For all of us blessed to have had Bill/Poppy in our lives, it will be his positive spirit, smile and laughter, teasing and jokes, and storytelling that will be missed most of all. Just this week he was smiling and singing “Happy Days are Here Again.” His honesty, insightfulness, and noble character will always be remembered, but Bill’s enduring legacy will be his beautiful family and the deep impact he made on all those he met. While our hearts are truly saddened and we will miss him dearly, it brings us peace to know he is reunited with his beloved Rosemary and together, they are smiling and watching over us. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 25 Purdue Ave. Oakland, NJ. The family will receive friends from 3 pm to 7 pm Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland, NJ. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at stjude.org in memory of William L. Fuchs. Out of consideration for all those in attendance, the family requests that masks be worn while indoors.
