When I first met Don in 1979, he was the most experienced "rookie" to join the department. Don came to the OFD, Co 2 and immediately made an impact on all of us. Don and Sue became fast friends of Nancy and I, they joined us on our wedding day in 1981 and provided us with many life's lessons as newly weds. When we bought our first house, a house in need of much love, they were quick to jump in and help us. It is with fond memories and much sadness that we learn of Don's passing. He will always be in out heart and prayers. R.I.P. Don

Chief, I wish I could be there to see you off with all our Brother Firefighters of both Bergenfield and Oakland. I want to give my condolences to your wife and your entire family on your recent passing. I’d love to be there but I’m laid up down in Barnegat with a broken leg. Our Brother Jerry Sippel is here with me and extended his condolences too. I want to thank you and your brothers who were all there for me when I made Chief of Bergenfield Fire Department and of Bergenfield Fire Co.#2,Inc. Your leadership paved the way for me and all those that have followed us. So your life here is over, you have gone on before me to prepare a special place in heaven for us all to meet again in the future. Till we meet again may you Rest In Peace. Robert E. Kirsch, Chief Bergenfield Fire Department 1984.

Don was a quiet, strong presence as he arrived on Sunday mornings to take his seat in the sanctuary while Sue practiced with the choir. That's how I knew Don over the years. He never sought attention but quietly served others. Thank you Don.

Donald was one of the kindest and devoted members of the Ponds Reformed Church. We shared many pleasant thoughts when I stopped by his pew on a Sunday morning. He had a twinkle in his eyes and a warm smile that made you know this is a good man. When the fire whistle would blow during Sunday Services, Don quickly left his pew and was off to serve the community of Oakland. He was one of the most dedicated and honored members of the Oakland Fire Company. He did many church and community tasks in his own quiet and humble manner. He never needed praise or recognition for doing the volunteer work he felt that needed to be done. He left large footprints for others to follow. He will be missed by all.

It has been a very long time but I have good memories of your father. He was a devout family man and I always remember him as a hard worker. I pray for your peace and comfort through this difficult time. May he rest in God's peace.
