Daniel J. Murphy, 83, formerly of Oakland, NJ passed away on February 1, 2019. He was born in Teaneck, NJ to John Michael and Juliette Emily (Calle) Murphy and was the youngest of their five children. Daniel was predeceased by brothers John Calle, George Francis and his sister, Sister Helen Murphy, SC. He is survived by his sister Marie Ann Veling of St. Augustine, Florida. Beloved father of Timothy Paul and wife Mary Alice of Hewitt, NJ, Linda Kaye of Whippany, NJ, and James Edward and wife Beatrice of Long Island City, NY. Cherished grandfather of Sarah, Rachel and Rae and will be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews. Daniel proudly served in the United States Army 78th Lightning Division rising to the rank of staff sergeant. Prior to retirement, he was employed in the aerospace and aviation field working on many planes including the KB50 Flying Tanker, B58 Hustler, SR 71 Blackbird, A4D Skyhawk, V-22 Osprey, 707, DC10, B2 Spirit, and the AH64 Helicopter and Minute Man Missile. Daniel was a member of the Awosting Yacht Squadron serving on the executive board and race committee. He was fleet captain of Lightning Fleet 95 and a member of Rebel Fleet 21. He enjoyed sailing on Greenwood Lake, Hudson River, Red Bank, Long Island Sound, Cape Cod, and Maine. He also was a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, was active in Cub and Boy Scouts, and served as Scoutmaster to Troop 52 of Oakland, NJ. Daniel will be dearly remembered for his wit, his storytelling, and his willingness to help others. The family invites relatives and friends to visitation on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland, NJ. A funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 25 Purdue Avenue, Oakland, NJ.In Lieu of Flowers Donations to the Oakland First Aid Squad.
