Hertel, Alfred Walter 86, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2015. He was born in Passaic, NJ to Arno and Ella Hertel (Pleissner) on September 27, 1928. He grew up in Clifton NJ and lived in Oakland many years before retiring to Hilton Head Island, SC. He was a graduate of Rutgers College of Pharmacy. Alfred was the owner of Oakland Drugs serving the community for more than 50 years. He was a former member of the Oakland Franklin Lakes Rotary Club, was a past president, and recognized by rotary international as a Paul Harris Fellow. He continued his Rotarian service in South Carolina. He was a Trustee of the Oakland First Aid Squad for many years. He enjoyed being with his family, playing tennis, boating, fishing and traveling. He was also an avid New York Football Giants fan. Alfred served in the Army medical corps during the Korean war. Alfred is predeceased by Lillian Hertel (nee Mastenbrook) his loving wife of 62 years and father to 3 children: Jeffrey Hertel and wife Dena of Franklin Lakes, James Hertel of Oakland and Karen Hertel-Koenig and husband Martin of Bloomingdale. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kristin and Katelyn Hertel, Eric Hertel and Kevin Koenig, Sister-in-laws: Anna Hornstra of Brookville, FL and Bernice Winn of St. Petersburg, FL. He was the loving Aunt to: Leslie Duffy, Lynn Stewart, Melanie Haggerty and Allyson Rabb. A funeral service for Alfred will be Saturday, September 5th at 9:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church 22-15 Broadway, Fair Lawn, New Jersey with the Reverend Deric Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow at Garden of Memories, Paramus, NJ. Visitation will be Friday, September 4, 2015 at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland, NJ from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad or Our Savior Lutheran Church.
