Obituary of Lillian J Hertel

Hertel, Lillian Joyce (nee Mastenbrook), 84, died peacefully on December 12, 2013. She was born in Passaic, NJ and lived in Oakland many years before moving to Hilton Head Island, SC. At age 18 she received her nursing degree from Passaic General Hospital where she also worked as a registered pediatric/obstetrics nurse. Lillian was the co-owner of Oakland Drugs for more than 50 years before retiring to Hilton Head Island. She was a former member of the Oakland Women's Club, loved spending time with her family, and throughout her life she enjoyed playing tennis, cooking, flower arranging and traveling. Lillian was a loving wife of 62 years to Alfred Hertel and mother to 3 children: Jeffrey Hertel and wife Dena of Franklin Lakes, James Hertel of Oakland and Karen Hertel- Koenig and husband Martin of Bloomingdale. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Kristin and Katelyn Hertel, Eric Hertel and Kevin Koenig, two sisters: Anna Hornstra of Brookville, FL and Bernice Winn of St. Petersburg, FL. She was the loving Aunt to: Leslie Duffy, Lynn Stewart, Melanie Haggerty and Allyson Rabb. Lillian is predeceased by her sister, Katherine Richter, brother-in-laws Carl Winn, Eric Richter, Nicholas Hornstra and niece Gail Hornstra. A funeral service for Lillian will be Wednesday, December 18 at 10a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church 22-15 Broadway, Fair Lawn, New Jersey with the Reverend Deric Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow at Garden of Memories, Paramus, NJ. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Oakland Memorial Home, 330 Ramapo Valley Road, Oakland, NJ from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John Robert Walker Memorial Oakland First Aid Squad, or the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, NJ or the Alzheimer's Association.
